Will Libby replace OverDrive on Kobo?
We plan to fully discontinue the legacy OverDrive app at the end of April 2023. At that time, users who try to access your library's collection in the OverDrive app will need to upgrade to Libby.
With some of the new Kobo e-readers, you can download the Libby app right to your Kobo.
This means that new OverDrive users will need to download the Libby app to access OverDrive eBooks and eAudiobooks on their Android and iOS devices. Current users of the OverDrive app may keep using it for now, but OverDrive plans to discontinue it in early 2023.

You can add eBooks from your library's website onto your Kobo eReader. Notes: OverDrive may not be available at your local library. Some books may not be available from your library.
While both apps serve the same purpose of borrowing and reading digital content from your library, they look and feel different, offering an entirely different user experience. Libby has a more modern, user-friendly interface, which is why OverDrive pushed this app instead of its original one.

The switch from Overdrive to Libby will not affect Kobo e-readers, since Kobo is using an API to fetch book listings, cover art and facilitate the download of books directly to your Kobo.
Several platforms are quite similar to Libby in terms of how they work. OverDrive, Hoopla Digital, and Librivox are a few great alternatives.
You can't borrow books with the Kobo Books app. Not all books found in the public library are available with OverDrive. The library book must also be sold on Kobo.com. If you find a book in your library that isn't sold by Kobo, you'll need to use Adobe Digital Editions to add the file onto your eReader.

The OverDrive App will be removed from all App Stores (Google, Microsoft and Apple) on February 1, 2022. From February 2022 to December 2022, the OverDrive App will continue to be functional but OverDrive will be encouraging users to transfer their content over to Libby.
The process for checking out books and placing holds is also basically the same between Libby and Overdrive. However, where Libby makes a big leap forward over its predecessor app is that when you have a hold come in, it automatically downloads into your library for you!
Why are some books not on Libby?
If you can't find some titles in Libby, there are a few possible reasons: Your library may not own a digital copy of the title. Since libraries build their own collections, not every library has the same titles available. Your library may not purchase titles in that format for their Libby collection.

Does Kobo sync with OverDrive?
Newer Kobo eReaders, such as Aura ONE, Aura Edition 2, Aura H20 Edition 2, Clara and Forma support the direct download of OverDrive eBooks to the Kobo eReader. Follow the setup instructions included with your Kobo before getting started.

Why is OverDrive going away?
With that in mind, OverDrive introduced a new app to borrow ebooks and audiobooks called Libby, which was inspired by library and user feedback and was designed to get people reading or listening to digital titles as quickly and seamlessly as possible. As a result, the OverDrive App is now facing retirement.
The OverDrive App will be removed in December 2022 and OverDrive will begin to provide support and updates only to the Libby App. The Libby App is OverDrive's most updated app for connecting seamlessly to your favorite eMaterials with advanced syncing, tags and searching capabilities.
